Thank you for downloading the School Days Localization Patch. This patch will help you install or convert your Japanese version of School Days into a fan-translated English version. We've made it as easy as possible to help non-Japanese speakers enjoy this fully animated bishoujo game while keeping most of the translations true to their original meanings. We are in no way trying to do a literal translation; most of the dialogue has been translated to fit with the characters as much as possible.
In this file you will find some basic information, such as system requirements, as well as some notes and solutions to common problems you may run into during gameplay.

Windows 9x/ME users are not supported by the localization patch.
Before Installing
For maximum compatibility while playing this game, please confirm that the system requirements above are met and ensure that the following is completed before running the installation program:
Make sure the latest graphics drivers and patches are installed for your operating system, including the latest version of DirectX.
Check to make sure you have up-to-date codecs. Install Windows Media Player 9 if you have Windows 2000 and WMP 11 or higher for newer versions of Windows.
We recommend that you set "Language for non-Unicode Programs" in Control Panel's Regional Options to Japanese. While English-language users may not experience problems, other languages that use characters outside of the standard ASCII character set may.
In addition to these tasks, you may also wish to download and install the optional Sekai Project certificate located at http://www.sekaiproject.net/files/?file=sekaiprojectca.der. This certificate will detect and validate any releases signed by the Sekai Project group as well as enable parental controls in the Games Explorer folder in Windows Vista and Windows 7. For more information on how the certificate works in Windows Vista/7, please see the corresponding section below.
For instructions on installing the certificate, please refer to http://www.sekaiproject.net/certificate/.
Note
Downloading the Sekai Project certificate is not required in order to run the game or the English patch.
Windows Vista/7
For Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, the game and patch have been tested to run properly on both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms. You may wish to download the optional Sekai Project certificate for UAC to recognize the digital signature on the English patch as well as to enable parental controls in the Games Explorer.
Warning
For parental controls to function properly, the Sekai Project root certificate must be installed before registering the game with Games Explorer.
User account control (UAC) can be enabled with no problems as the game does not require administrator privileges to run properly. Users with UAC enabled will see one of two types of elevation prompts when running the installation executable: a grey dialog box with Sekai Project if the certificate above is installed, or a yellow dialog box with Unknown Publisher if the certificate is not installed. If you receive the latter, please ensure that you have downloaded the installer from sekaiproject.net, or else you may have a bad or corrupt copy of the installer. To check the integrity of the installer, MD5 and SHA-1 hashes are posted in the Sekai Project downloads section for comparison.
For the users who plan to or did install School Days inside the "Program Files" folder, you may notice strange behavior in regards to your configuration and save files.
If you have UAC enabled in Windows Vista/7 64-bit edition, your save files and configuration data are located in the %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Overflow\SchoolDays folder if installed to %PROGRAMFILES(x86)%\Overflow\SchoolDays.
If you have UAC enabled in Windows Vista/7 32-bit edition, your save files and configuration data are located in the %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore\Program Files\Overflow\SchoolDays folder if installed to %PROGRAMFILES%\Overflow\SchoolDays.
If you have UAC disabled, your save files and configuration data are located in the School Days installation folder.
Warning
In either version of Windows Vista or Windows 7, toggling UAC will change the location of the save data store, and it may appear as if you have lost your data until you restore the previous UAC setting or move the files. Therefore, refrain from changing the UAC setting unless absolutely necessary.
Installation
To start the installation, double-click on the sd_install.exe icon and follow the instructions. A small delay may occur due to the size of the installation file.
If you do not have the game installed, the English patch installer will install it for you. However, you will have to provide the game disc as the original game files are read from it. Uninstalling the English patch will remove the game as well.
If you have the game installed already, the English patch will co-exist with it and essentially install as a separate add-on. When you uninstall the English patch, the original game will remain, patched to version 1.11.
If you have the game and English patch installed already, the installer will update your existing components to their newest versions.
During installation, you may notice the disk space usage has grown larger than the size of the patch. The extra space is used only during installation, and temporary files will be cleaned up by the installer when it is completed.
Note
You will not be able to modify your installation without uninstalling and reinstalling again after the English patch installer has completed successfully.
When running the game for the first time, subtitles must be enabled. To turn the feature on, start the game, move the mouse cursor to the top of the screen, click on options, then turn on subtitles. You only need to do this once per installation!
Save File Compatibility
Because of the way the School Days game engine works, save files from different versions are not compatible with each other. Please back up all save files before starting the game. Windows 2000/XP users can find the save files in the SAVE folder inside the School Days installation directory. For locating the save files in Windows Vista or Windows 7, please refer to the Windows Vista/7 section of this readme above.
During installation, the installer will attempt to back up your existing save files to the best of its ability even if they are in multiple users' VirtualStore directories in Windows Vista/7. Please note however that once the game patch is uninstalled, you may have to rename the backup folder for the game to read your original save data.
Determining Your Version
Versions of the English patch are actually denoted by a Release Package Identifier (RPID). This identifier uniquely identifies each build of the installer package even if the contents inside have not changed, as well as the development SVN revision that the contents were pulled from, and finally the stated patch release version.
The RPID format is as follows: (package_ID_part_A):(package_ID_part_B)/(development_SVN_revision)-(release_version).
For most purposes, the release version at the end is all you need. However, we identify all releases by the full RPID in case of issues with the package build itself and not the contents inside.
In order to find the RPID of the patch that you have installed, it is easiest to look under Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features (depending on your version of Windows).
The RPID can also be found on the first page of the uninstaller itself.
Note that the Details tab of the .dll files that are part of the English patch do not necessarily reflect the installed version, as those files are not updated with every release. The RPID is the most accurate method of determining the installed version.
Known Issues
When the game is installed using the official 1.00 installer and the 1.11 update is applied using either the Sekai Project installer or the official update installer, upon uninstall 1.11's patch files remain. This is an issue with the behavior of the official uninstaller that we will not attempt to rectify.

Honorifics
This translation assumes some basic knowledge of Japanese honorifics.
For those unfamiliar with them, a list is provided below:'-san': Used to address almost anyone in a respectful manner.
'-chan': Used to address a young person (usually female) familiar to the speaker.
'-kun': Used to address a young person (usually male) familiar to the speaker.
'-sama': Used to address any person in a very respectful manner.
'Senpai, -senpai': Used to address one's senior (in school, a particular activity, life, etc).
'Sensei, -sensei': Used to address one's teacher (and other figures worthy of respect).
'Onii': One's elder brother.
'Onee': One's elder sister.

The characters in School Days have some notable names which players may find interesting or significant.Sekai (世界): 'World'

Makoto (誠): 'Truth, sincerity'
Setsuna (刹那): 'Instant, moment'
Hikari (光): 'Light'
Otome (乙女): 'Girl, maiden'

Dialogue
"Just leave everything to Sekai-san."
While it's usually acceptable to refer to someone else as '-san', it's generally considered arrogant to use the honorific to describe oneself.
"Just call me Sekai." "Eh?"
In Japan, family names are a common way of addressing people with whom you are not overly familiar or friendly. Unlike in the West, where you would usually only address people you dislike by last name, there is no derogatory connotation with this usage. First names (especially without honorifics) are only used between very close friends and family.
"She's even added '-sama'."
Refer to 'Honorifics' and note 1. The addition of '-sama' rather than '-san' indicates even greater arrogance.
"How about a manga cafe?"
As the name implies, a manga cafe is a cafe in which guests can browse a collection of manga while they eat. Many manga cafes in Japan are open 24/7.
"...and then go to Sakakino Hills afterwards..."
While Sakakino is (as far as I know) not a real place, 'Sakakino Hills' is presumably modelled upon Roppongi Hills, an enormous property development in Tokyo featuring office space, apartments, shops, restaurants and various other amenities.
Common Problems
Video is a black screen, but the sound still works.
Update to the newest version of Windows Media Player.Everything is installed correctly, but when the game is started, a slight blip noise is made and the error "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." comes up.
You likely have a virus. A thorough cleaning of your computer should take care of the problem.After the game is uninstalled using the original installer, some files remain.
This behavior is normal with the original installer. Patch 1.11 files and registry entries are not deleted with the original installer due to a design flaw. This issue will not be fixed by us, but it can be avoided by installing the game and version 1.11 patch from scratch with the English patch installer.
